PROJECT
DESCRIPTION: The Longhouse is envisioned to be a cultural and event center
for the Nez Perce Tribe. Currently, an informal gathering space is
utilized for cultural events which is heavily under-sized for its current
function. The new Longhouse will provide room for a Sacred Floor, a
kitchen and restrooms. The main entrance to the building will be
oriented to the east to respect the rising sun. The center of the
Sacred Floor will be exposed earth, providing a direct connection to the
site.
Fifty-foot long
log poles will provide the structure which will be clad in either cedar
planking or a Hardie Panel product. Translucent panels will provide
natural daylight and help to lower utility costs. The interior will
pay homage to Tribal heritage by utilizing a natural materials palette.
