Project Description: This project was a major renovation of the
previously existing 14,548
square foot facility and is a model project for promoting the benefits of green
buildings as well as a Washington State standard for Major Renovations. Original planning for the facility began in 2005 with the
submittal of the 'Project Proposal Request'; in 2006 the pre-design was completed;
and in May of 2008 the project was awarded to Chervenell Construction.
Construction began in June of 2008 and was completed in August of 2009. This
project will be the first on the CBC Campus to meet USGBC’s LEED Silver
Status, which exceeded that benchmark and was awarded Gold Certification.
The Real Estate & Construction Review recognized the environmental
success of this project and voted this project as one of the best new green
projects in the Northwest for 2009. Sustainable features include: solar
water heating system, high energy efficiency, natural daylighting, 50% water
usage reduction, indoor air quality control, use of regional materials, and
maximizing surrounding open space. This building is located in the core of the
Columbia Basin College Campus and offers both formal and informal learning
environments. The facility will be constructed out of CMU, wood framing,
and metal roofing and now houses the Business Education, Criminal Justice, and
Paralegal Departments for the College.
